Numerical Methods: Heat Equation uses the Simly slider-based interface to make it easy for students to investigate how changing input parameters in numerical method simulations of heat diffusion problems affects the solution. Introductory material, guided quizzes and "stealth assessments" complete the learning experience.


Solutions to the heat equation on a plane with settable Dirichlet boundary conditions can be calculated and shown for both steady-state and transient problems. Steady state solutions can be found with the Finite Difference Method using Gauss-Jacobi or Gauss-Seidel solvers, or directly solved with the Finite Element Method. Transient solutions can be found with either 1st-Order Explicit or Implicit solvers
